1 ImageOverview and setting
The village exemplifies the small settlements typical of Calvados, with agricultural land, hedged fields and scattered farmsteads in the Normandy "bocage". The territory has a predominantly rural character and traditionally relied on mixed farming and local services.
Name and historic character
The place-name combines a dedication to Saint Denis, a common medieval patron, with "Maisoncelles", an old French term meaning "small houses" that appears in many Normandy toponyms. Such names reflect the parish-centered settlement pattern of the Middle Ages and subsequent centuries.
Administrative change and reasons
In 2015–2016 many small communes joined together to form larger administrative units for reasons of cost-sharing, improved public services and stronger local planning. Saint-Denis-Maisoncelles became part of Souleuvre-en-Bocage at that time; it remains identified locally by its historic name in cultural and cadastral records.
