Overview
Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district (commonly shortened to SAS Nagar and widely known as Mohali) is one of the districts of the Indian state of Punjab. Created in April 2006 during a reorganisation of state administration, it was established to improve local governance as the urbanised area around Chandigarh expanded. The district includes rapidly growing residential neighbourhoods, industrial estates, technology parks and surrounding rural villages.
Name and identity
The official name honours Sahibzada Ajit Singh, the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh, and SAS Nagar means "The City of Sahibzada Ajit Singh." Despite the formal title, the traditional name Mohali remains commonly used in everyday speech, business and media, so both names are widely recognised and used interchangeably.
Geography and administration
Located adjacent to the union territory of Chandigarh, the district is part of the wider tri-city region that links Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. Administratively it follows the standard Indian district framework: a district administration headed by senior officials manages law and order, revenue and development functions, while local municipal bodies handle urban services and civic planning in towns and cities.
Economy and infrastructure
The local economy is diversified. Urban sectors contain residential townships, retail centres and information-technology parks that developed from the early 2000s onwards. Industrial areas and small-scale manufacturing remain important in peripheral zones, while agriculture continues in the rural hinterland. Proximity to major road and rail connections serving the Chandigarh region has supported commerce, logistics and investment.
Transport
SAS Nagar benefits from good road links into Chandigarh and neighbouring districts, and regional rail services connect the area to larger cities. The nearest major airport serving the district is the airport that serves the Chandigarh metropolitan region. Public and private transport systems support daily commuter movements across the tri-city area.
Education, health and culture
The district hosts a variety of schools, colleges and professional training institutes, as well as hospitals and clinics that serve local and regional populations. Cultural life reflects Punjabi traditions alongside a cosmopolitan urban culture: religious sites, community centres, festivals and public parks are important focal points for residents.
Sport and recreation
Mohali is known for prominent sporting facilities, most notably the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, which stages national and international matches and has raised the district's profile in Indian sport. There are also public sports complexes, green spaces and facilities for local clubs and schools.
Development and challenges
Since its formation the district has seen rapid urban growth and infrastructure expansion. Planning priorities include managing urbanisation, improving public services, expanding transportation links and balancing development with the needs of agriculture and small towns. Like many fast-growing districts, SAS Nagar faces challenges related to land use, environmental management and provision of affordable housing and services.
Significance
Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district is notable for its dual identity as both a modern urban and economic hub within the Chandigarh metropolitan area and a place whose official name recognises an important figure in Sikh history. Its role as a centre for sport, IT, industry and residential development makes it a key district in contemporary Punjab.
