Matkari's output approached one hundred separate titles. His published oeuvre included stage plays, collections of one-act plays, volumes of short stories, novels and poetry for children. He also wrote regularly for newspapers and magazines. The range of his work covered full-length dramatic texts, short fiction intended for literary readers, and a significant amount of material written specifically for children and youth theatre.

Across formats Matkari favored concise dialogue and tightly constructed plots that could be staged effectively. Many of his plays reflect an interest in human relationships, moral dilemmas and social observation, often expressed with understatement rather than rhetoric. He wrote both for professional companies and for school and community productions, paying close attention to practical stage requirements and actorly possibilities.

Career, journalism and film

In the 1970s Matkari worked as a columnist, notably writing the column Soneri Savalya for the periodical Apale Mahanagar for four years. He collaborated with theatre practitioners in Mumbai and elsewhere and later adapted his own stage work for the screen. In 2013 he directed the film Investment, based on his play of the same name, bringing his theatrical sensibilities to cinematic storytelling.

Matkari died in COVID-19-related illness on 17 May 2020 in Mumbai at the age of 81, and his work continues to be staged and read by successive generations interested in modern Marathi drama.
