A ramp is an inclined surface that connects two different elevations, reducing the effort required to move people, goods or vehicles by permitting travel along a slope rather than lifting vertically. Ramps appear across engineering, architecture, transportation, industry and recreation and are also the common name for a spring-harvested wild leek (Allium tricoccum) in eastern North America.

Characteristics and design considerations

Important qualities of ramps include slope (angle or gradient), length, width, surface texture, edge protection and the presence of handrails or curbs. Slope is often given as a ratio (rise:run) or percentage; many building codes and accessibility guidelines, for example in the United States, recommend a maximum slope of 1:12 for pedestrian ramps used by wheelchair users. Designers must balance a gentle grade, which improves safety and accessibility, against available horizontal space. Drainage, lighting and non-slip surfaces are typical safety features.

Common types and uses

  • Accessibility ramps: permanent or portable ramps at entrances, between floors or along sidewalks to accommodate wheelchairs, strollers and people with reduced mobility.
  • Loading ramps: used in freight operations to bridge vehicle beds, docks and platforms for cargo handling.
  • Vehicle ramps and driveways: inclines in garages, parking structures and roads.
  • Sports ramps: skatepark elements (quarter-pipes, half-pipes), BMX jumps and ski/snowboard launch ramps.
  • Aircraft and military ramps: boarding aprons, air-stairs and temporary logistics ramps for rapid deployment.
  • Botanical: the edible wild leek known as the ramp.

Materials, construction and safety

Ramps are built from concrete, steel, timber, aluminum or modular prefabricated sections depending on use, load and environment. Regular maintenance—clearing debris, repairing surfaces and ensuring handrails and edge protection remain secure—helps prevent accidents. Where regulations apply, geometric features such as ramp length, intermediate landings, handrail height and maximum slope are specified to ensure usability for all.
