Ramón Echarren Istúriz (13 November 1929 – 25 August 2014) was a Spanish Roman Catholic bishop whose ministry spanned the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Ordained to the priesthood in 1958, he was later consecrated a bishop and served in important pastoral and administrative roles in the Church of Spain.
Ecclesiastical career and appointments
In 1969 Echarren Istúriz was named titular bishop of Diano and appointed auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Madrid, where he assisted the archbishop in the pastoral care of the capital region and in diocesan governance. Nine years later, in 1978, he was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Canarias, a jurisdiction of the Church in the Canary Islands. He led that diocese until his retirement in 2005 and remained a bishop emeritus until his death in 2014.
Typical responsibilities and pastoral focus
As an auxiliary bishop in Madrid, Echarren Istúriz would have supported the archbishop by visiting parishes, overseeing specific pastoral programs, confirming Catholics, and representing the archdiocese at civic and ecclesial events. As diocesan bishop of Canarias he assumed full responsibility for guiding priests, promoting sacramental life, supervising Catholic education and charitable activity, and coordinating the diocesan curia and tribunals.
