Overview
Putnam County is a county in the state of New York, located in the lower Hudson Valley just north of Westchester County. It is part of the New York metropolitan area and combines suburban communities, preserved open space and a network of reservoirs that supply water to New York City. According to the 2010 census, the county had 99,710 residents. The administrative center and county seat is Carmel, which houses county offices and courts.
Geography and communities
Putnam occupies a modest area along the east bank of the Hudson River and the adjacent highlands. Its landscape includes rolling hills, lakes and forests. The county is organized into several towns and villages; principal towns include Carmel, Kent, Patterson, Putnam Valley, Philipstown and Southeast. Notable population centers and villages include Brewster, Cold Spring and the hamlet of Mahopac.
History and name
The county was established in the early 19th century and was named for General Israel Putnam, a figure from the American Revolutionary War. Its development followed patterns common to the Hudson River valley: agricultural early settlement, later 19th‑century transportation improvements, and 20th‑century suburbanization driven by improved road and rail links to New York City.
Environment, parks and infrastructure
Putnam is known for significant public lands and parts of the Hudson Highlands. Large tracts such as state parks and preserved forests offer hiking, boating and scenic views. Several reservoirs in the county are part of the Croton watershed and contribute to the region's water supply. The county is also served by commuter rail and regional roads that provide daily connections for residents who work in the city.
Economy and character
Economically, Putnam functions largely as a residential and service-oriented county with local retail, small industry, and public sector employment. Many residents commute to jobs in Westchester, the Hudson Valley and New York City, while the county maintains a quieter character compared with its more densely populated southern neighbor.
