Puerto Varas: Chilean lakeside city with German heritage

Location and physical features

Set in the Los Lagos Region, Puerto Varas faces one of Chile’s largest lakes and sits near an arc of volcanic cones and temperate rainforest. History and origins

The town developed in the mid-19th century as part of a state-sponsored colonization initiative that encouraged German immigration to southern Chile. Settlers brought building techniques, farming methods and culinary traditions that shaped the town’s character. The place name honors Chilean statesman Antonio Varas and the community grew from a port and agricultural center into a tourist destination.

Puerto Varas retains many examples of German-influenced wooden houses, churches and public buildings. Local gastronomy features bakeries and pastries reflecting Central European roots, alongside Chilean lake-region dishes.
