Prêles was a small municipality in the administrative district of Jura bernois in the canton of Bern, in Switzerland. Geography and character

Prêles occupied a landscape typical of the Plateau de Diesse region: low rolling hills that link the lakeshore to higher Jura ridges. The setting favored small-scale agriculture, pastureland and quiet residential hamlets rather than dense urban development. Its position offers scenic views and a relatively tranquil environment that attracts residents seeking countryside living within reach of regional centres.

History and administrative change

The community’s history follows the pattern of many small Swiss villages, with agriculture and local ties forming the backbone of everyday life. On 1 January 2014 the former municipalities of Diesse, Lamboing and Prêles were consolidated to create the new municipality called Plateau de Diesse. This merger was part of a wider trend in Switzerland to combine small communes to improve administrative efficiency and public services.

Economy, transport and culture

Before the merger, Prêles’ local economy relied on agriculture, small businesses and commuter links to nearby towns. Public transport connections and local roads provide access to larger centres for employment, education and services. Culturally, the village reflects the traditions of the Bernese Jura with French-language schools, community associations and local festivals that emphasize rural heritage.

Today Prêles is recognized as a locality within Plateau de Diesse; its landscape, community structures and local identity continue to contribute to the character of the new municipality, illustrating how small Swiss communities evolve through cooperative regional planning.
