Career and teams

The Dakar Rally was a central event in Gonçalves's calendar; he was a frequent and familiar competitor in the event as it moved locations and terrain over the years. On 12 January 2020 he suffered a serious crash during the seventh stage of the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. He was evacuated to a hospital in the town of Layla where he was pronounced dead at the age of 40.
