Paul O'Brien (chemist): British inorganic materials scientist and academic leader

Paul O'Brien (1954–2018) was a British chemist who led materials research at the University of Manchester, known for work on inorganic materials, precursor chemistry and semiconductor nanomaterials. FRS, FREng, FRSC, CBE.

Paul O'Brien CBE FRS FREng FRSC (22 January 1954 – 16 October 2018) was a British inorganic chemist and university leader. He served as Professor of Inorganic Materials at the University of Manchester and held senior administrative posts there, combining research with the management of large academic schools.

Research focus and contributions

O'Brien's research explored the chemistry of inorganic materials and how molecular precursors can be used to make functional thin films, nanoparticles and semiconducting compounds. His work bridged synthetic chemistry, materials processing and applications in electronics and optics. He published extensively on precursor design, solution and vapor-phase routes to materials, and the controlled synthesis of metal chalcogenides and oxide systems that are relevant to optoelectronic devices.

Academic roles and leadership

At the University of Manchester, O'Brien combined research with leadership. He was Head of the School of Chemistry from 2004 to 2009 and later Head of the School of Materials from 2011 to 2015. Colleagues remember him for mentoring students and fostering multidisciplinary collaborations across chemistry, physics and engineering within the university and with industrial partners.

Awards, honours and recognition

O'Brien received multiple professional distinctions: he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). In January 2016 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in recognition of his services to science and higher education (CBE). His institutional affiliation during much of his career was the University of Manchester (Manchester).

Legacy and impact

Beyond publications, O'Brien contributed to the training of a generation of materials chemists and helped to shape research programmes in inorganic materials. His approaches to precursor chemistry and controlled synthesis have been used by researchers seeking scalable routes to functional nanomaterials and thin films. He died on 16 October 2018 at the age of 64, leaving a legacy of teaching, leadership and technical innovation.
