Geography and landscape

The central feature of Östergötland is the Östgötaslätten, a fertile lowland that dominates the interior. The province also reaches the Baltic coast with a rocky archipelago and contains several notable lakes and waterways. The Göta Canal and other historic waterways cross parts of the region, linking inland lakes to the sea and supporting both commerce and tourism.

History and identity

The name Östergötland essentially means the eastern territory of the Geats. Settlements in the area date back to prehistoric times and the province played a role in medieval Swedish religious and political life. Towns such as Linköping and Vadstena developed important religious institutions, and various castles and manors reflect the region's long historical continuity.

Economy, culture and uses

Agriculture has long been central on the Östgötaslätten, producing cereals and fodder on the flat soils. Industrial development concentrated in coastal cities: Norrköping became known for textile and manufacturing, while Linköping developed as a centre for technology, education and public administration. Cultural life includes museums, historic churches, festivals and a lively music and arts scene in the larger towns.
