Orofino occupies river valley terrain framed by forested hills and nearby reservoirs. The Clearwater River is a dominant feature, shaping both the town’s landscape and its recreational opportunities. History and origins

The site developed as a frontier settlement after gold discoveries and mining activity in the region; the town’s name is derived from Spanish words meaning "fine gold." Before Euro‑American settlement, the area was long inhabited by the Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) people. Over time the local economy shifted from prospecting to timber, river transport and services.

Timber and related industries have historically been important, while county government, small businesses, health and education services now supply many jobs. The nearby Dworshak Dam and reservoir, national fish hatchery operations, and the Clearwater River attract anglers, boaters, rafters and hikers.
