Overview
The Audi Cup 2009 was the first edition of a biennial, invited pre-season football tournament organized and sponsored by the German carmaker Audi. Staged over two days in late August 2009 at the Allianz Arena in Munich, the event brought together four high-profile clubs from Europe and South America for exhibition matches intended as preparation for the coming season and as a marketing showcase.
Format and participants
The competition used a compact knockout format: two semi-finals on the first day, followed by a third-place match and a final on the second day. If a match was level after 90 minutes it proceeded directly to a penalty shoot-out. The four invitees were Bayern Munich (hosts), Manchester United (England), AC Milan (Italy) and Boca Juniors (Argentina).
Results
The tournament produced tight, low-scoring contests. Bayern Munich won the title after a goalless final against Manchester United that was decided by penalties. The hosts prevailed in the shoot-out by a one-goal margin. In the third-place match Boca Juniors defeated AC Milan after the teams finished level in regular time and the result was again settled on penalties.
- Semi-finals: Bayern Munich and Manchester United won their respective semi-final ties to reach the final.
- Third place: Boca Juniors beat AC Milan on penalties after a draw in normal time.
- Final: Bayern Munich beat Manchester United on penalties following a 0–0 match.
Context and significance
As a pre-season event the Audi Cup combined sporting preparation with commercial exposure: clubs used the matches to assess squads and fitness levels while Audi reinforced its sponsorship and brand presence. The tournament established a pattern for future editions, attracting elite clubs and fans to Munich in non-competitive, friendly conditions.
