Attilio Bignasca (1 November 1943 – 29 March 2020) was a Swiss politician best known for his long service as a federal representative from the Italian-speaking Canton of Ticino. A member of the regionalist Ticino League, he held a seat in the lower house of the Swiss Parliament, the National Council, for nearly three decades and was a public figure in Ticino politics.

Overview

Bignasca's parliamentary career began in 1991 when he was elected to represent the Canton of Ticino. He served continuously in the National Council until 2019. His political activity was closely associated with the Ticino League, a regional movement that emphasizes local concerns, autonomy for the canton, and a populist approach to national issues.

Early life and background

Born in the Viganello quarter of Lugano, Bignasca came from a family that played a prominent role in Ticino public life. His brother, Giuliano Bignasca, was a founder and leading personality of the Ticino League. Attilio's roots in Viganello and the Italian-speaking cultural area shaped his political outlook and kept his focus on regional matters within the wider context of Switzerland.

Political career and positions

During his time in the National Council, Bignasca was identified with issues important to Ticino voters: local governance, cross-border relations with neighbouring Italy, and a skeptical stance toward centralized policies perceived as out of step with cantonal priorities. He and his party often adopted a direct, populist tone and campaigned on defending local jobs, services, and identity.
