The National Football Conference (NFC) is one of two conferences that make up the National Football League. It groups 16 professional teams into a single competitive structure and determines one conference champion each season. The NFC champion receives the George Halas Trophy and advances to face the champion of the other conference in the Super Bowl. For broader league context, see the NFL and the counterpart AFC.
Organization and divisions
The NFC is divided into four geographic divisions: East, North, South, and West. Each division contains four teams, for a total of 16 franchises. Team placement in divisions is intended to preserve regional rivalries and balance schedules while providing a clear path to the postseason through division titles and wildcard berths.
Regular season and playoffs
The NFC regular season determines which teams advance to the playoffs. Since the NFL expanded its postseason field, seven teams qualify from each conference: four division winners and three wild-card teams with the best remaining records. The playoff bracket is single-elimination, culminating in the NFC Championship Game. The winner of that game receives the George Halas Trophy and represents the conference in the Super Bowl, where the Vince Lombardi Trophy is awarded to the league champion.
History and development
The NFC emerged from league reorganization associated with the AFL–NFL merger era and subsequent realignments. Its membership and divisional composition have evolved through expansion, franchise moves, and the league-wide realignment that established the current four-division-per-conference format. Over decades the conference has seen dynasties, intense rivalries, and periods of parity that shaped its identity within professional football.
Notable features and significance
Beyond competition, the NFC has major cultural and economic impact through large fanbases, national television exposure, and historic stadiums. Several NFC franchises have multiple Super Bowl appearances and championships, contributing to storied traditions and celebrated rivalries. Championship games and playoff runs often define a franchise's legacy within the conference and the sport as a whole.
