Overview

National Chung Cheng University (commonly abbreviated CCU) is a public research university located in southern Taiwan. Established in 1989 and named after Chiang Kai-shek (Wade–Giles: Chiang Chung-cheng), CCU serves as a regional center for higher education and scholarship. The university combines classroom teaching, graduate education and applied research across a broad range of disciplines.

Organization and academic profile

CCU is organized into multiple colleges and graduate institutes that cover core academic areas such as science, engineering, humanities, social sciences, management, law and education. Programs include undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees, with curricula designed to support both disciplinary depth and interdisciplinary collaboration. The university emphasizes research-led teaching and the development of professional skills alongside theoretical study.

Campus and location

The main campus is situated in the Chiayi area (Chiayi) and is characterized by a suburban setting with green spaces, laboratories, libraries and student facilities. The campus environment supports both academic life and extracurricular activity, and is positioned to engage with the economic and cultural needs of southern Taiwan.

History and development

Founded in 1989, CCU was created to expand access to higher education outside the island's major metropolitan centers. Since its founding the university has grown in academic scope, adding graduate programs and research centers. Its name honors a historic political figure, reflecting a common practice in Taiwan of commemorating national leaders through institutional names.

Research, partnerships and internationalization

CCU participates in national research initiatives and maintains collaborations with other universities and industry partners. It is a member of the Taiwan Comprehensive University System, a consortium that facilitates joint programs and resource sharing among participating institutions. The university also runs exchange programs and hosts international students and visiting scholars to promote cross-border academic cooperation.

Distinctive roles and community engagement

Beyond teaching and research, CCU contributes to regional development through applied projects, public events and professional training. Its graduates enter public service, business, education and research roles across Taiwan. As a mid-sized public university, CCU aims to balance local impact with growing national and international research ambitions.
