History and administrative change
Nastola grew up as a rural municipality serving local farms, villages and small industries. Over time, economic integration and the need to streamline services led to closer cooperation with the neighbouring city of Lahti, culminating in the 2016 municipal consolidation. Such mergers are part of a broader pattern in Finland of adjusting local governance to demographic and financial pressures.
Population, economy and services
In 2013 the population was about 15,107, giving an indication of a small but substantial local community. The local economy was a mix of agriculture, small businesses and services, with many residents commuting to Lahti and other nearby centres for work. Public services, schools and local shops continued to serve residents before and after the merger.
Culturally and recreationally, the area is known for access to nature, year-round outdoor activities and local traditions typical of Päijänne Tavastia. Since incorporation into Lahti, planning and municipal services have been coordinated by the larger city administration while many local associations and community groups maintain Nastola's local character.
