Location and geography

The settlement was situated in the department of Mayenne, part of the Pays de la Loire region, in the general area of northwestern France. The surrounding territory is typical of this part of the country: agricultural land, small woods and local roads linking villages and market towns. Its position made it representative of rural communes in the French administrative landscape.

History and administrative change

Historically Montourtier functioned as an independent commune, with its own town hall and municipal council as provided by the French communal system. On 1 January 2019 the commune ceased to exist as an independent administrative unit when it was merged with nearby communes. The merger combined Montourtier with Montsûrs-Saint-Céneré, Deux-Évailles and Saint-Ouën-des-Vallons to create a new municipality named Montsûrs.

Local life and economy

Before the merger, daily life in Montourtier revolved around agriculture, local services and community institutions typical of small French communes: a church or chapel, communal facilities and events linked to seasonal farming cycles. Small-scale farming, livestock and family-run enterprises are common in such areas and contribute to local employment and identity.

Significance and distinctions

Montourtier illustrates a broader trend in rural France: administrative consolidation to pool resources and improve public services. The 2019 merger is one example of communes joining together to manage schools, infrastructure and local planning more effectively. While the name Montourtier now refers mainly to a locality within the larger Montsûrs municipality, its historical records and community memory remain relevant to local heritage.
