Miklós Fehér (20 July 1979 – 25 January 2004) was a Hungarian professional footballer who played as a forward. He began his career in Hungary before moving to Portugal, where he became best known for his spell with S.L. Benfica. Fehér also represented his country at senior level for the national team and was widely regarded for his work rate and commitment on the pitch.
Playing profile
Fehér combined physical presence with a keen sense of positioning inside the penalty area. He was noted for his aerial ability, off-the-ball movement and willingness to press opponents. Although not a prolific scorer by the highest European standards, he was valued by coaches for his tactical discipline and for changing the dynamic of matches when introduced as a substitute.
Club career
After establishing himself in the Hungarian leagues, Fehér moved to Portugal to continue his professional career. At club level he played in the Portuguese top division and earned a place at one of the country’s most recognised teams, where he achieved his highest profile and formed part of a squad competing in domestic competitions.
International career
Fehér represented Hungary at senior international level. He was selected for the national side on multiple occasions and brought to the team the same combative approach and finishing instincts he showed in club football.
Death and legacy
In January 2004, at the age of 24, Fehér collapsed during a Portuguese league match after suffering a cardiac arrest and later died. Medical staff at the stadium attempted resuscitation and he was taken to hospital, but efforts were unsuccessful. His death shocked the football community and prompted renewed attention to cardiac screening, emergency response training and the availability of defibrillators at matches and training grounds.
Clubs and supporters paid tribute to Fehér in the months after his death. His memory is honoured in commemorations and moments of silence, and his passing remains a reference point in discussions about player welfare and medical preparedness in sport.
