Overview
Mesocco is a municipality in the Moesa district, located in the Misox valley (Val Mesolcina) of the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. Nestled at the northern end of the valley, Mesocco combines a village core with outlying hamlets and high-altitude settlements. The area is part of the Italian-language cultural region of Graubünden, which also contains German- and Romansh-speaking areas.
Geography and subdivisions
The municipality covers a large area of valley floor, slopes and alpine terrain, making it one of the more extensive communes in the canton. The main settlement, also called Mesocco, is subdivided into multiple neighborhoods and smaller sections. Among these is the mountain village of San Bernardino, situated near the pass of the same name that links the Misox valley with southern Switzerland. The landscape is characterized by steep valley walls, mountain pastures and the river that drains the valley.
History and transport
Mesocco has medieval roots and is dominated visually by the ruins of a hilltop castle that dates to the Middle Ages; the castle served as a local stronghold and administrative seat in earlier centuries. The San Bernardino pass has long been an important alpine crossing, used by traders and travellers for centuries. Modern road and tunnel links now provide reliable year-round connections between north and south, which shaped the development and accessibility of the municipality.
Administration, economy and culture
Mesocco functions as a local administrative center: it hosts secondary education for the immediate region, district judicial offices and several cantonal services. The local economy blends public administration with tourism, mountain agriculture and small businesses. Outdoor recreation — hiking, skiing and alpine excursions around San Bernardino — supports seasonal visitors, while traditional pastoral practices continue in mountain meadows.
