Merksplas is a municipality in the Flemish Region of Belgium, located in the province of Antwerp. The town lies in the sandy heathlands of the Campine (Kempen) at approximately 51°21′N, 04°51′E. In 2007 the population was recorded as 8,270; the community has since remained a small, semi‑rural municipality with local services, farms and light industry.

Geography and character

Merksplas occupies flat, well‑drained terrain typical of the Kempen region. Its landscape combines farmland, patches of woodland and areas of heather and sand. The municipality functions as a local centre for surrounding villages and as a residential area for people working in nearby towns.

History and the Merksplas Colony

One of the most distinctive aspects of local history is the Merksplas Colony (often called the Kolonie), a 19th‑century agricultural settlement created for the rehabilitation and employment of vagrants and convicts. The colony shaped Merksplas’s layout and economy and many of its buildings and communal structures reflect that institutional origin. Today the site is regarded as a noteworthy part of the town’s heritage.

Administratively the municipality provides basic public services and local governance typical of Belgian communes. Its community life combines traditional rural trades with contemporary commuter links to larger urban centres in Antwerp province.

Visitors encounter a quiet, historically layered town with agricultural activity, modest cultural amenities and walking routes through the surrounding Campine countryside. For municipal information see the local pages on Merksplas and regional guides to the province of Antwerp.
