Overview

McCormick County is a small county in the western Piedmont region of the United States. The county seat and largest town is McCormick. According to the 2010 census, 10,233 people lived in the county. McCormick County was created in 1916 and remains one of the less-populated counties in its state.

Location and geography

The county lies in the western part of South Carolina and is part of the broader area of the state bordering the Savannah River. Its setting includes mixed forests, farmland and shoreline along a large reservoir on the Savannah River, which supports fishing and boating. The rural landscape gives the county a low population density compared with urban areas of the United States.

History and formation

McCormick County was officially formed in 1916 from portions of neighboring counties. The new county developed around small towns, agriculture, and the transportation and economic patterns of early 20th-century South Carolina. Over time, recreation on nearby lakes and the conservation of wooded areas became important to the county’s identity.

Economy, population and services

The local economy is a mix of agriculture, forestry, small businesses and services that support residents and seasonal visitors. Tourism connected with lake recreation and hunting contributes to the economy, while local government provides basic services from its seat at McCormick. Demographically, the county’s sparse population makes countywide planning and infrastructure distinct from more populous counties in the region.

Recreation and notable features

Visitors and residents often come for outdoor recreation: boating, fishing, camping and wildlife watching along the reservoir and in nearby woodlands. Historic small-town centers, local festivals and ranches contribute to community life. Practical information about the county’s administration and statistics is available through county offices and regional planning organizations; for mapping and legal designations consult county and state resources linked to official pages (county, federal, state).
