Overview
Maulvibazar (Bengali: মৌলভীবাজার জেলা) is an administrative district in the Sylhet region of northeastern Bangladesh. The area is widely recognized for its tea estates, natural forests and wetland systems. It functions as a local commercial and cultural centre within the broader Sylhet Division and the country of Bangladesh.
Geography and environment
The district lies near the international border with the Indian state of Meghalaya and features a mix of low hills, alluvial plains and extensive marshlands known locally as haors. These diverse landscapes support important habitats, seasonal fisheries and a range of agricultural activities.
Notable sites and biodiversity
Maulvibazar contains several environmentally and culturally important locations. Lawachara National Park protects patches of tropical forest and native wildlife; Hakaluki Haor is one of the region's largest wetlands, important for migratory birds and freshwater fisheries. The Sreemangal area is famous for contiguous tea gardens and attracts visitors for birdwatching and nature walks.
History and name
The district’s name reflects its origins as a market ('bazar') associated with a learned Muslim cleric ('maulvi'). Modern administrative boundaries developed under colonial-era reforms and were later adjusted after the partition of the subcontinent and the creation of independent Bangladesh. Tea cultivation expanded during British rule and remains a defining economic legacy.
Administration and economy
The district is divided into several upazilas (subdistricts), including Moulvibazar Sadar, Sreemangal, Kulaura, Barlekha, Kamalganj, Rajnagar and Juri. Economic life centers on tea production, rice and other crops, fisheries in the haors, and a growing tourism sector. Local communities include Bengali-speaking majorities and indigenous groups with distinct cultural traditions.
