Geography and climate

The territory lies inland from the Mediterranean coast and forms part of the Tell Atlas foothills and adjacent plains. History and name

The name of the province is derived from an Arabic term meaning "military garrison" or camp, reflecting historical patterns of settlement and defense. The area has deep historical roots, including Ottoman and French colonial periods, and it has cultural links to important Algerian figures associated with the region.

Economy and society
