Márton Fülöp (3 May 1983 – 12 November 2015) was a Hungarian professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Born in Budapest, he rose through domestic youth systems before moving to England, where he spent the bulk of his career. He is widely remembered for steady performances across the English leagues and for representing his country at senior level.
Early career and development
Fülöp developed in Hungary's club system and featured for several Hungarian sides in his early years. After initial senior appearances at MTK Budapest and smaller Hungarian clubs, a move abroad opened the next phase of his career. His professional profile grew as he combined domestic experience with training and competition at higher levels.
Club career in England and Greece
Fülöp's move to England began when he signed for Tottenham Hotspur, who saw potential in the young keeper and used loan moves to give him first‑team experience. During those years he had a series of temporary and permanent spells that defined his club career:
- Tottenham Hotspur – the English side that secured his services and arranged loan moves to aid his development.
- Chesterfield and Coventry – early loan spells where he gained regular minutes in competitive matches.
- Sunderland – initially a loan that became a permanent transfer in 2007, providing Fülöp with extended opportunities at a higher level.
- Further loans included Leicester City, Stoke City and a brief period at Manchester City, each offering different challenges and exposure across the English league system.
- Ipswich Town followed as a permanent move where he continued to feature, and later he had spells with West Bromwich Albion and Greek club Asteras Tripoli before retiring.
International career
Fülöp represented Hungary at under‑21 level and progressed to the senior national team. He made his full international debut in 2005 and went on to earn 24 senior caps. His international career included qualifying campaigns and friendly matches in which he served as one of Hungary's principal goalkeepers during the mid‑2000s.
Playing style and legacy
As a goalkeeper, Fülöp was noted for his shot‑stopping, command of the penalty area on crosses, and professionalism in preparation and training. Teammates and coaches often praised his work ethic and calm presence behind the defence. Although he did not accumulate a cabinet of major trophies, his steady performances across multiple clubs and leagues left a positive impression among supporters and peers.
Illness and passing
After returning to Hungary late in life, Fülöp's career and life were cut short by a serious illness. He died in Budapest on 12 November 2015 following a battle with cancer, at the age of 32. News of his death prompted tributes from former clubs, teammates and the Hungarian football community. His international record and years playing abroad remain central to how he is remembered by fans.
