Mansoura (Arabic: المنصورة) is an important urban center in Egypt, serving as the capital of Dakahlia Governorate. The city lies in the northeastern Nile Delta and has a metropolitan population on the order of about 960,000 people. It combines administrative functions with commerce, education and regional medical services.
Geography and urban form
Mansoura stands on the eastern bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile amid a flat, fertile plain. The built-up area contains a compact historic core and more modern suburbs that extend into agricultural land. The surrounding countryside remains dominated by irrigated crops — especially rice, cotton and other food staples — which help feed both local industry and export markets.
History and name
The name Mansoura means "the Victorious" in Arabic. The city grew up in the medieval period and became widely known after the Battle of Mansurah in 1250, when forces of the Ayyubid sultanate and their allies confronted the invading Crusaders. Over the centuries Mansoura developed as a regional market town and later expanded under Ottoman and modern Egyptian administrations into a provincial capital.
Economy, transport and services
The local economy mixes agriculture, light industry and services. Textile workshops, food-processing plants and small manufacturing firms operate alongside wholesale trade and retail commerce. Mansoura is linked by rail and road to Cairo, Port Said and other Nile Delta cities, and it functions as a distribution and services hub for the surrounding governorate.
Education, health and culture
Mansoura is an educational center with a large public university and associated teaching hospitals that attract students and patients from across the Delta. Cultural life includes sports clubs, local festivals and municipal cultural institutions. Medical services and specialized clinics are a significant part of the city’s regional role.
