History and development

The university traces its origins to a number of nineteenth‑ and twentieth‑century colleges of art, technology and teacher education that were progressively merged. These predecessor institutions contributed strong traditions in art and design, technical education and professional training. The organisation moved through a period of re‑organisation in the late twentieth century and obtained university status in the early 1990s.
