The municipality occupies a largely inland area of forests, lakes and rolling terrain typical of Dalarna. History and name change

The present municipal structure was formed in 1971 through the consolidation of smaller municipalities that had existed under older administrative arrangements. The entity was originally known simply as Malung Municipality. In response to the growing importance of winter tourism and to increase recognition of its ski facilities, the Swedish national government made a decision that led to an official name change to Malung-Sälen effective 1 January 2008; that decision is recorded by the Government of Sweden.

Two sectors stand out in the local economy: traditional small-scale industry and tourism. The area around Malung has long-standing crafts and light industries while the higher terrain near Sälen supports alpine skiing, winter resorts and related services. The municipality promotes the Sälen area as a destination, linking municipal identity to the well-known Sälen ski resort and the broader Sälen region (Sälen), which attract visitors for downhill and cross-country skiing, hiking and summer outdoor recreation.

As with other Swedish municipalities, Malung-Sälen is responsible for primary and secondary schools, social services, local planning, roads and water services.
