Madison County is a rural county in the U.S. state of Iowa. The county seat is Winterset, a small town noted for its historic square and cultural attractions. At the 2010 census the county had a population of about 15,679; its economy is largely based on agriculture, small manufacturing, and tourism.
Geography and character
Located in south-central Iowa, Madison County features rolling farmland, tributaries of Midwestern river systems, and a primarily rural landscape. Towns are compact and services are concentrated in Winterset and a few other small communities. Land use is predominantly corn, soybeans, and livestock, interspersed with woodlots and small recreational areas.
History and name
The county was organized in the 19th century and takes its name from President James Madison. Early settlement followed general westward migration patterns across the Midwest, with communities growing around agriculture, mills and local trade. Over time the county preserved many historic buildings and rural structures.
Cultural significance and attractions
Madison County is especially famous for its covered bridges, which inspired the best-selling novel The Bridges of Madison County and the subsequent film adaptation. Visitors come to see restored bridges, participate in local festivals, and follow driving tours. Winterset is also known as the birthplace of film star John Wayne and maintains a museum and related historic sites to honor that heritage.
Government, economy, and community life
Local government is administered by an elected board of supervisors and provides services typical of Iowa counties, including road maintenance, public safety coordination, and records. The local economy combines modern farming practices with small businesses, tourism-related services, and light industry. Community life centers on school events, county fairs, and cultural programs held in Winterset and neighboring towns.
