Munasinghe Kariyawasam Appuhamilage Don Somadasa (M. K. A. D. S.) Gunawardana (6 March 1947 – 19 January 2016) was a Sri Lankan public figure and lawmaker. Over several decades he served as a Member of Parliament and held ministerial office. He is commonly cited as an example of a politician whose career spanned more than one major party in Sri Lanka, and who was active in land administration at the national level; see him described as a Sri Lankan politician.

Political alignment and parliamentary service

Gunawardana began his political life within the mainstream of Sri Lankan politics and was associated with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) before later aligning with the United National Party (UNP). During his time in Parliament he represented his constituents through multiple terms and served on parliamentary committees. His movement between parties reflected broader shifts in Sri Lankan political alliances rather than a single defining ideological realignment.

Ministerial role and responsibilities

On 12 January 2015 Gunawardana was appointed Minister of Land, a portfolio that typically covers land administration, registration, surveying, titling and related policy matters. As minister he was responsible for overseeing government action on land records, tenure issues and reforms intended to improve clarity of ownership and reduce disputes. His term in this office continued until his death, and his work touched both urban and rural land administration practices.

Gunawardana's parliamentary career and cabinet membership made him a recognizable figure in discussions about governance, property rights and public administration. He was known to colleagues as a seasoned legislator who worked across party lines on technical subjects such as land law and records management.

Death and legacy

Gunawardana died on 19 January 2016 in Colombo. His death followed an illness; reports note he succumbed to cancer at the age of 68. Following his passing, commentators noted his long public service, his role in the Land Ministry, and his presence in both major parties as aspects of his political legacy.
