Overview: Lyon County lies in western Nevada, in the western United States. Its county seat is Yerington, and the area reported a population of 51,980 at the 2010 census. The county combines broad agricultural valleys, small towns and stretches of high desert, and it sits within commuting distance of the Reno–Tahoe economic region.

Geography and economy

Lyon County encompasses irrigated farming basins, rangeland and small mountain ranges. Agriculture—particularly cattle ranching and hay production—remains important, while recent decades have seen growth in distribution, light manufacturing and services, especially near transport corridors. Proximity to Interstate corridors has encouraged industrial and residential development in towns such as Fernley.

History and development

The region was traditionally inhabited by Native American peoples before Euro‑American settlement in the 19th century. Lyon County developed during Nevada's mining and ranching booms; mining activity and the arrival of rail and road links shaped many of its communities. The county carries historical ties to frontier settlement and early statehood.

Communities and recreation

  • Yerington — county government, local services and agriculture center.
  • Fernley — a growing logistics and residential community connected to regional highways.
  • Silver Springs, Dayton, Smith Valley and smaller settlements that support local ranching and tourism.

Outdoor recreation, historic sites and a rural lifestyle attract residents and visitors. County government and tourism information can be found through official local resources and community pages (county seat resources, regional guides).
