Loudoun County (pronounced LOWD-ən) is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It lies within the greater Washington metropolitan region and has experienced significant residential and economic growth since the turn of the 21st century.

Population

The 2010 United States Census recorded a population of 312,311 for Loudoun County. This figure represented a large increase from the 2000 census count of 169,599 — an increase of roughly 84 percent over that decade.

Government and communities

The administrative center of the county is the county seat, Leesburg, which serves as the location for county government offices and many local services.

Economy

Loudoun County has ranked among the nation’s highest-income counties. In 2007 the county’s median household income was reported as $107,207, a level that at the time exceeded that of nearby Fairfax County, Virginia (reported as $105,241 in 2007). These figures reflect the county’s relatively high wages and strong demand for housing associated with jobs in the Washington area.
