Overview

LMFAO was an American musical duo that combined elements of electronic dance music, hip hop and pop into a self-described "party rock" sound. Formed in Los Angeles in 2006, the act consisted of Redfoo (Stefan Kendal Gordy) and SkyBlu (Skyler Gordy). Their name is an acronym commonly interpreted as "Laughing My F***ing Ass Off" and reflected the irreverent, celebratory tone of their songs and visual presentation.

Members and background

Redfoo, the older member, is the son of Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr.; SkyBlu is a younger relative from the same extended Gordy family. The duo blended familial showmanship with contemporary club production, often dressing in bright, attention-grabbing outfits and using choreographed moves as part of their image. Their music is frequently categorized as electro hop, crossover pop, or party-oriented EDM.

Musical style and public image

LMFAO's songs emphasize simple, catchy hooks, repetitive choruses and heavy electronic beats designed for clubs and radio. Lyrics revolve around partying, dancing and comedic bravado. Visually they favored sunglasses, hats and colorful suits; their videos and live shows used humor and exaggerated personas. They also helped popularize a revival of the shuffle-style dance in mainstream pop culture.

Career highlights and releases

The duo released two studio albums: Party Rock (2009) and Sorry for Party Rocking (2011). From the latter came several international hits, most notably "Party Rock Anthem" (featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock) and "Sexy and I Know It", which became worldwide pop staples and received extensive radio, streaming and video play. Their work appeared across television and advertising and they toured internationally before stepping back from the project.

Legacy and distinctions

LMFAO left a visible imprint on early 2010s pop culture by merging EDM production with mainstream pop songwriting and a party-oriented brand. Though the duo went on hiatus as members pursued solo projects, their songs continued to be used at celebrations and in media.
