Overview

Livingstone is a city in southern Zambia, situated close to the border with Zimbabwe and on the banks of the Zambezi River. It is widely recognised as the main gateway for visitors to the Victoria Falls, one of Africa’s most famous natural landmarks. The town functions as a regional centre for tourism, transport and cross-border trade.

Geography and landmarks

The city lies near a dramatic river gorge below the falls and serves as the entry point to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the Zambian side. Prominent features include the Victoria Falls Bridge, which spans the gorge and links the two countries, and viewpoints that offer seasonal but spectacular views of the falls and spray. Nearby natural attractions include riverside islands, rapids for adventure sports, and scattered wildlife within the park.

History

Livingstone takes its name from the Scottish explorer David Livingstone, who brought European attention to the falls in the 19th century. The settlement grew during the colonial era as a missionary, trading and administrative centre. During the first half of the 20th century it was an important colonial capital and later became a focal point for heritage preservation and tourism.

Tourism, activities and economy

Tourism dominates the local economy. Visitors come for the falls and for outdoor and cultural experiences. Typical activities include:

  • Guided walks and viewpoints at Victoria Falls and in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park
  • River excursions, fishing and white-water rafting on the Zambezi
  • Adventure activities around the gorge such as bungee jumping and gorge swings
  • Game drives, birdwatching and visits to local craft markets and museums

Culture, transport and notable facts

The Livingstone Museum houses local history and artefacts linked to early exploration and regional cultures. The falls are locally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, "The Smoke That Thunders," and the Victoria Falls area is recognised internationally for its scenic and ecological importance. Livingstone is served by road links, an airport for regional flights, and the historic bridge that facilitates pedestrian and vehicle crossings between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Distinctions

Victoria Falls is a shared transboundary natural wonder and a UNESCO-recognised site; Livingstone’s role is primarily as the Zambian hub for access, interpretation and conservation of the falls and surrounding parks. The city remains focused on balancing visitor services with protection of its unique river and wildlife environments.
