Overview

Les Autels-Saint-Bazile is a former rural commune in the northwest of France. Until 2016 it existed as an independent municipal entity in a sparsely populated, agricultural part of the country. On 1 January 2016 it ceased to be independent when it was incorporated into a larger municipal structure as part of a national process of consolidation.

Geography and administration

The locality lies within the historical region of Basse-Normandie, in the department of Calvados, in northern France. It belongs to the Pays d'Auge area, known for rolling pastures, hedged lanes and small villages. Administratively the territory and its public services are now managed by the new commune, which groups several neighboring villages together.

History and municipal change

The place name combines a local toponym and a saint’s name, reflecting medieval settlement patterns and the historical importance of parish churches in rural France. For modern administrative purposes Les Autels-Saint-Bazile was merged into Livarot-Pays-d'Auge on 1 January 2016, a change intended to improve service delivery and strengthen local governance by pooling resources.

Character and economy

Like many small communities in the Pays d'Auge, the former commune is characterized by agricultural land use, dairy farming, orchards and traditional Norman farm architecture. Local features that visitors and researchers note include a modest parish church, farmsteads, and lanes lined with hedgerows.

Significance and practical notes

Although it no longer exists as an independent municipality, the identity of Les Autels-Saint-Bazile continues in place names, cadastral records and local memory. Genealogical, property and historical records are retained by departmental and communal archives.
