Overview

Lavenay is a former rural commune situated in the west of France. Administratively it lay within the Sarthe area and the broader Pays de la Loire region. On 1 January 2017 Lavenay ceased to exist as an independent municipality when it was merged into the newly created commune of Loir en Vallée as part of France's recent territorial reorganisation.

The locality is typical of small north-western French settlements: dispersed farms, a village core with a parish church or chapel, and landscape shaped by arable fields and hedgerows. The surrounding countryside is often crossed by small streams and secondary roads and is used primarily for mixed agriculture and pastoral activity.

History and administrative change

Lavenay developed like many rural communities in this part of France, with local history tied to agriculture and small-scale industry such as mills. In the 2010s a national policy encouraging the formation of 'communes nouvelles' led to voluntary mergers intended to pool resources and simplify local governance. Under that process Lavenay was combined with neighboring communes to form Loir en Vallée, reflecting larger trends in territorial reform.

Today, local governance and services are organised at the level of the new commune and the relevant departmental authorities. The former commune's territory remains an identifiable locality and continues to contribute to the cultural and landscape identity of the area within the region and the department.

Features and significance

Although small, places like Lavenay are important for understanding rural settlement patterns in western France. They often retain traditional buildings, small public spaces and local paths used for walking and cycling. The area can be of interest to visitors seeking quiet countryside, local history, and regional architecture rather than urban attractions.
