La Salle County is a rural county in South Texas. It had 6,886 residents at the 2010 U.S. census and is centered on the small city of Cotulla, the county seat. The county is commonly identified with the South Texas plains and brush country; its social and economic life has long revolved around ranching, local services and transportation links.

Geography and transport

La Salle County occupies a portion of South Texas characterized by semiarid brushland, ranch pastures and low rolling terrain. Major north–south transportation corridors provide access to larger Texas cities: Interstate 35 runs through Cotulla and links the county with San Antonio to the north and border crossings to the south. Local roads connect dispersed ranches and small communities.

History and name

The county takes its name from the French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, whose 17th-century expeditions are part of regional historical memory. European settlement and the growth of cattle ranching shaped the county in the 19th century, and the seat at Cotulla became a local service center for ranchers, travelers and later energy-related workers.

Economy and land use

Traditionally the economy has been based on ranching and agriculture. In the 21st century, oil and natural gas exploration in South Texas has affected parts of the county and neighbouring areas, bringing periods of increased employment, service demand and infrastructure activity. Local businesses tend to serve agriculture, energy, transportation and the community’s daily needs.

Population, government and culture

La Salle County has a small, predominantly Hispanic population and a county government organized around a commissioners court with Cotulla as the administrative center. Cultural life reflects South Texas traditions: ranching heritage, community fairs, local schools and church activities. Historic buildings and the county courthouse in Cotulla are focal points for local identity.
