Origins and historical role

The town traces its origins to the 13th century, when the Livonian Order established a fortification in the area (commonly dated to 1242). It received formal town rights in 1378 and for several decades played a regional role within the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia; from 1587 until 1617 it functioned as the ducal seat.
