Overview

The District of Krujë is a historical administrative unit in north-central Albania, with the town of Krujë as its administrative center. Traditionally counted among the country's thirty-six districts, it has been associated with Durrës County. Older sources record a population figure of roughly 67,700 for the district; more recent reforms and censuses have altered administrative boundaries and reporting.

Geography and administration

Krujë sits inland on the slopes of a small mountainous area that overlooks surrounding plains. The district historically encompassed the town of Krujë and nearby settlements, combining upland terrain with agricultural valleys. Modern governance in Albania has been reorganized into larger counties and municipalities, so the term "district" is now mainly used in historical or statistical contexts rather than as a primary level of government.

History and cultural heritage

Krujë is most famous for its medieval castle and its role in Albanian resistance during the 15th century under the national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. The town's castle, a museum dedicated to Skanderbeg, and an old bazaar attract visitors interested in history and traditional crafts. The area's long history includes Ottoman-era settlements and earlier Illyrian and medieval influences that shaped local culture and architecture.

Economy, tourism and notable sites

The local economy combines agriculture, small-scale commerce and cultural tourism. Visitors come for the castle, the Skanderbeg Museum, and the restored Ottoman-style bazaar where traditional crafts are sold. Nearby natural areas offer hiking and viewpoints over the plain toward the Adriatic. Notable sites include:

  • Krujë Castle and fortress complex
  • Skanderbeg Museum inside the castle
  • The historic bazaar and artisan workshops

While the district as an administrative label is less prominent now, Krujë remains a significant cultural and historical center in the region, drawing both Albanian and international visitors interested in the nation's medieval past and traditional crafts.
