Kgalagadi District occupies a broad, dry expanse in the southwest of Botswana, with the village of Tsabong serving as its administrative centre. The district lies within the greater Kalahari region and is characterised by sandy soils, open savanna and long dry seasons. Human settlement is sparse and communities are often dispersed across large distances.

Geography and climate

Kgalagadi covers much of the southern Kalahari and borders Namibia and South Africa. The landscape is mostly flat to gently undulating, with dominant sand dunes and interdune plains. Rainfall is low and highly variable, producing an arid to semi-arid climate that shapes vegetation and land use. Vegetation is typically drought-adapted grasses, low shrubs and occasional trees.

Biodiversity and protected areas

A significant share of the district is set aside for conservation. More than one-third of Kgalagadi District falls within the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, a cross-border reserve that links protected lands in Botswana and South Africa. Other important conservation sites include the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Deception Valley and Khutse Game Reserve, all of which support adapted wildlife such as antelopes, predators and a variety of bird species.

Economy and settlement

The local economy is based primarily on extensive livestock keeping, subsistence activities and tourism linked to game reserves. Settlements are concentrated around Tsabong and a handful of villages; much of the land remains rangeland. Tourism infrastructure tends to be oriented toward low-density, nature-focused experiences such as wildlife viewing and guided safaris.

Administration and history

Kgalagadi is administered as a district of Botswana and is divided into two sub-districts: Kgalagadi North and Kgalagadi South. The name reflects the Setswana term for the Kalahari region. Administratively, services and development face challenges posed by remoteness, water scarcity and the needs of pastoral communities.
