Jumbo Tsuruta

Overview and early career

Tsuruta emerged in the world of professional wrestling in the early 1970s and quickly established himself as a heavyweight competitor. Wrestling under the nickname “Jumbo,” he built a reputation for steady in-ring fundamentals, hard strikes and suplex-based offense. He spent the vast majority of his career working with All Japan Pro Wrestling, where he became one of the company’s most reliable main event attractions for more than a decade.

Career highlights and championships

The defining achievement of Tsuruta’s career was the unification of three of Japan’s premier heavyweight titles: the Pacific Wrestling Federation (PWF) Heavyweight Championship, the NWA United National Championship, and the NWA International Heavyweight Championship. By combining those belts he became the first holder of AJPW’s Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship, a distinction that placed him at the top of his promotion and in the company of Japan’s most celebrated champions.

Style, persona and notable matches

Tsuruta’s in-ring style blended power moves with technical mat wrestling. Those matches helped define the hard-hitting, athletic style for which AJPW became famous during his era.

Legacy

Jumbo Tsuruta is remembered as one of the foundational stars of modern puroresu. His role as a dependable top-card performer helped All Japan Pro Wrestling grow its audience through the 1970s and 1980s, and his status as the first Triple Crown champion created a title lineage that remained central to the promotion for decades. Fellow wrestlers, promoters and fans have cited him as an influence on subsequent generations of Japanese heavyweights.

After a distinguished in-ring career, Tsuruta’s life was cut short when he died in 2000. He continues to be honored in retrospectives about the era in which he wrestled and in histories of All Japan Pro Wrestling, where his accomplishments remain a significant part of the company’s heritage.
