Early life and formation
Born in 1952, Thống was formed for the priesthood in the context of a rapidly changing society. He was ordained to the priesthood and spent many years in parish ministry, diocesan service and pastoral work. Service as auxiliary bishop and diocesan bishop
Appointed auxiliary bishop in 2001, he assisted the archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City in pastoral governance, confirmations and administrative responsibilities in one of Vietnam’s largest Catholic jurisdictions. In July 2009 he was appointed bishop of Phan Thiết, a coastal diocese in southern central Vietnam. As diocesan bishop he led clergy formation, promoted liturgical life, supported parish development and represented the local Church in relations with civic authorities.
Cultural work and public engagement
As head of the Episcopal Committee on Cultural Affairs, Bishop Thống focused on the role of the Church in cultural preservation and artistic expression. The committee’s priorities typically include promoting cultural heritage, supporting religious arts and music, encouraging education that respects both faith and national identity, and fostering dialogue with other religious and cultural groups. His leadership emphasized how Catholic faith and Vietnamese cultural traditions can inform and enrich one another.
