Coaching career and timeline

Ramsay's head coaching career began in college and moved into the professional ranks. He served as head coach of Saint Joseph's University from 1955 to 1966, then coached in the National Basketball Association with several franchises:

• Philadelphia 76ers (1968–1972)
• Buffalo Braves (1972–1976)
• Portland Trail Blazers (1976–1986)
• Indiana Pacers (1986–1988)

His most notable team achievement was guiding the Portland Trail Blazers to the NBA championship in 1977, an early high point in the franchise's history. After leaving coaching he continued to contribute to the sport through broadcast work and public appearances.

Style, influence and achievements

Ramsay emphasized conditioning, ball movement and a fast-break attack, combined with man-to-man defensive principles. He was praised for preparing teams tactically and for his energetic, encouraging sideline presence. In recognition of his career accomplishments he entered the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992 (Hall of Fame).

Death
