Independent Women

Independent Women is a song by the American girl group Destiny's Child. It was written and produced by Beyoncé for her third studio album Survivor. The song first appeared on the soundtrack to the film 3 Angels for Charlie in 2000. Independent Women featured Michelle Williams singing for the first time as a member of Destiny's Child.

The original song was called Independent Women Part Two, Independent Woman Part One was a Pasadena remix in the original, so the song was renamed Independent Women.

However, both versions were released on the soundtrack to the film and on the album. The song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for a full 11 weeks, from November 2000 to February 2001. In the UK, both versions of the song were released on the same day.

The music video was directed by Francis Lawrence, at the end of the video the girls parody in scenes from the movie.

Background

The song is preserved at number 85 in the list of the 100 best British songs of all time, released in May 2002.

Commercial success

Independent Woman was a mega success in the USA. The single reached number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100, which they were able to hold for a whole 11 weeks. It was the third number one hit of the girl group in the USA. The song had a great airplay, as it was played very often by the American radios, which also made the song stay at number 1 in the airplay charts for 10 weeks.

In the UK, Independent Woman debuted at #1 and became their second #1 hit in the UK. The British Phonographic Industry awarded the single Gold for over 400,000 sales. It also reached the number one spot in Canada, Ireland and New Zealand.
