Independence is a census-designated place (CDP) in Inyo County, California. It is the county seat of the county. The population was 669 at the 2010 census, up from 574 at the 2000 census.
Independence is 41 miles (66 kilometres) south-southeast of Bishop. It is at an elevation of 3,930 feet (1,200 metres).
