History and name

Hyannis takes its name from Iyannough, a sachem of the Cummaquid band of the Wampanoag people who inhabited the area before European settlement. English colonists established farms and maritime enterprises in the 17th and 18th centuries; in later centuries Hyannis developed as a shipping, fishing and trade center before evolving into a tourism and service economy.

Economy and culture

The local economy is driven by tourism, retail, hospitality and marine services, with marked seasonal fluctuations in activity. Cultural attractions include maritime museums, galleries, and performance venues; a small museum and interpretive sites remember the area's Native American heritage and coastal history.
