Humble Pie was an English blues-rock band that came together in 1969, formed by singer-guitarist Steve Marriott and young guitarist Peter Frampton, with Greg Ridley on bass and Jerry Shirley on drums. The group combined Marriott’s soulful, forceful vocals and songcraft with a louder, more hard-rocking approach than Marriott’s previous work. They quickly built a reputation for high-energy live performances and concise, blues-rooted rock songs.
The band’s sound blended blues, soul and hard rock: gritty rhythm guitars, strong vocal harmonies and a heavy backbeat. Early recordings showed a balance between acoustic, melodic passages and louder electric numbers. Over time their live shows emphasized volume and improvisation, helping them gain a wider audience in the United States as well as the UK. A single often associated with the band is "30 Days in the Hole", which appears on the album Smokin'.
Line-up changes and career turning points shaped Humble Pie’s arc. Peter Frampton left after the first years to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Clem Clempson; this change steered the band toward a tougher, more guitar-driven sound on later studio albums and stage performances. Humble Pie recorded a mix of studio and live albums; their live recordings in particular captured the immediacy that made them a popular concert act.
By the mid-1970s the original run of the band ended, and members moved on to other projects. In later decades there were reunion attempts and new configurations led by surviving members, while Marriott’s untimely death in 1991 and the later deaths of other members closed parts of the group’s original story. Peter Frampton achieved major solo success, bringing additional attention back to his earlier work with the group.
