Hulshout is a municipality in the Flemish Region of Belgium, located in the province of Antwerp. The municipal area comprises several villages and rural settlements and lies at approximately 51°04′N, 04°47′E. For official information see the municipality's resources: Hulshout municipal page. Hulshout is part of the Belgian state and province networks: Belgium and the province of Antwerp.

Geography and subdivisions

The municipality has a largely rural character with agricultural land, small wooded areas and village centres. Hulshout is normally described as including three main sections: Hulshout proper, Houtvenne and Westmeerbeek. The area is within commuting distance of larger towns such as Lier and the city of Antwerp and is served by local roads and regional public transport links.

History and identity

The place name likely reflects local landscape features and early medieval settlement patterns common in the Low Countries. Over centuries Hulshout developed around parish churches, farms and small craft industries. Like many Flemish municipalities, it preserves historic buildings and village layouts while adapting to 20th and 21st century changes.

Population and administration

Hulshout is Dutch-speaking (Flemish) and governed by a municipal council and mayor. Population figures have changed gradually; for example, in 2007 the municipality counted 9,371 inhabitants. Local government is responsible for services such as planning, local roads, cultural activities and schools.

Economy, transport and local life

The local economy mixes agriculture, small businesses, local services and some light industry. Residents often commute to nearby urban centres for work. Public transport and regional roads connect Hulshout to surrounding municipalities, while local community life centers on village events, churches, schools and sports clubs.

Notable features and visiting

Visitors to Hulshout can expect village churches, traditional farm buildings and modest green spaces rather than major tourist attractions. The municipality offers a peaceful example of central Flemish rural life and provides access to regional cultural and natural sites. More practical and visit information is available through local and provincial portals: municipal information and the Antwerp provincial pages.
