Horgen is a municipality and town in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland. It serves as the administrative centre of the district of Horgen and lies on the south-western shore of Lake Zurich. The town combines lakeside residential areas and a compact historic centre with green, wooded hills rising to the west.

Geography and character

Situated along one of the larger stretches of the lake's south bank, Horgen has a mix of shoreline promenades, boating facilities and inland neighbourhoods. The surrounding landscape includes gentle slopes and small forests that are popular for walking and outdoor recreation. In recent decades the town has grown as part of the broader Zurich regional area while retaining village-like quarters and local centres.

History and archaeology

Horgen's lakeshore has been occupied since prehistoric times. Archaeological finds made near the town gave their name to the Neolithic "Horgen culture," a pottery-using cultural group identified by researchers working on lake-shore settlements. Over subsequent centuries Horgen developed as a local market and transport point on routes along Lake Zurich and between the plateau and the higher ground to the west.

On 1 January 2018 the former municipality of Hirzel was merged into the municipality of Horgen, expanding its area and incorporating more rural and hillside territory into the town's administrative boundaries.

Economy, administration and services

As district capital, Horgen contains local administrative offices and a range of services for residents: schools, shops and healthcare facilities. The local economy combines small- and medium-sized businesses, crafts and service industries, together with a sizeable commuter population who travel to the city of Zurich and other nearby centres for work.

Transport and connections

  • Rail and regional services provide frequent connections to Zurich and neighbouring towns.
  • Passenger boat services operate on Lake Zurich, linking Horgen with other lakeside communities.
  • Road and bus networks connect the town with the surrounding countryside and highways.

Culture, leisure and notable facts

Horgen offers lakeside recreation, watersports, hiking trails and local cultural events. The archaeological importance of its lakeshore settlements is a distinctive feature: the term "Horgen culture" remains part of archaeological literature and public interpretation. The town is also known locally for its harbour and promenade, and for being a convenient residential base within the Zurich region. For further municipal information see Horgen.

Visitors will find a mix of historical traces, active community life and easy access to both lake and upland countryside—features that help explain Horgen's role as both a local centre and a residential town near Switzerland's largest metropolitan area.
