Overview
Höfe District is one of the administrative districts of the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland. It is compact in area but significant economically and demographically: the district recorded a population of 29,332 as of 31 December 2020. Administrative and urban life are concentrated around the towns of Wollerau and Pfäffikon.
Geography and municipalities
Höfe occupies part of the lakeshore region on the eastern side of Lake Zurich and the adjacent foothills. The terrain combines developed lakeside towns, transport corridors, and rural slopes that offer recreational space and views over the lake. The district comprises three municipalities; for an official listing and municipal details see municipalities.
Economy and transport
The district is known for a strong local economy with a pronounced presence of financial services, regional headquarters and small industry. Towns such as Wollerau and Pfäffikon serve as important nodes: Wollerau is often noted for its favorable tax environment, while Pfäffikon is a recognized local center for finance and commerce. Good rail and road connections make the district an important commuter belt for the Zurich metropolitan area.
History and development
Historically the area developed from rural lakeside settlements into suburban and service-oriented towns during the 20th century, driven by improved transport links and the broader growth of the Zurich economic region. This transformation brought rising residential demand and business activity, reshaping local services and municipal planning.
Notable features and distinctions
- High per-capita income levels relative to many Swiss districts, reflecting concentrated wealth and business presence.
- Mixed land use: lakeside recreation and tourism combine with offices and residential neighborhoods.
